Reader’s question
"I would be so grateful for your advice on how to place my furniture in the living room. The dimensions are 3.80x5.80m. On the narrow side there a balcony door in the center flanked by small windows on each side. On the opposite right corner there is the fireplace. On the right long side perpendicular to the fireplace is a wall 2m long and the 2.50m opening to the kitchen. On the left long wall opposite the kitchen opening there is a window similar to the ones flanking the glass door. How to arrange a corner sofa, a TV furniture combo or whatever piece of furniture you think I could place and what color scheme to choose?"
We use the terms "interior finishings" or "interior finishes" to describe those interior space elements that are fixed in place. They are usually attached to other structural elements of the building, like for example to the walls, ceilings, floors, etc. So, interior finishings most of the times are non-structural elements. They have decorative purpose or both decorative and functional.
Common types of interior finishings:
- Interior doors.
- Wall treatments
- Ceiling treatments
- Stairways
- Posts and columns
- Space divisions systems.
- Cabinets and countertops
- Plumbing fixtures
- Lighting
"My living room is 3m x 3.80m large. Opposite the 3m wall there is open space. The fireplace is on the middle of the opposite the 3.80m wall with the chimney in a recess. I need help how to arrange the sofas. Thanks in advance."
Our recommendation
You haven’t mentioned the openings in the living room and also we do not know anything about the open space opposite one of the walls.
"We are renovating our house and we have a problem with the interior doors. We decided on classic natural oak flooring to match our contemporary walnut living room furniture. We would like laminated doors and the color options we have colors are walnut, cherry, wenge and white washed oak. Which color do you suggest to choose for a modern yet harmonic result?".
"My kitchen cabinets are wenge with handles and knobs in stainless steel and I would like purple tile backsplash. What color should be the countertop and what pretty durable material to choose? ".
Our recommendation
The countertop can be bright white or beige sand color; these two colors are perfectly combined with the purple tile.
Regarding the countertop material, you can choose quartz or corian, which are both very durable materials. You need to know the price of each material because it may determine your choice.
The sink may be made from the same material as the countertop or it can be stainless steel.
Patchwork is a technique of cutting and sewing small pieces of fabric creating larger textiles. However, the idea of joining diverse fabrics together and creating completely new designs, has not only inspired quilters and textile artists but also furniture designers. These are some of the most interesting examples that apply the philosophy of patchwork into furniture making.
- Commode by Entwurf-Direkt. According to the creators the design of these objects is basically an antidesign as its respective shape is a result of putting together the findings as they come along. This can be compared to a remix done with pieces of music or else a collage as found in the arts. Each piece of furniture is a unique specimen, as they depend on the findings that are not available in unlimited numbers.
