Reader’s question
“I would like some decorating ideas next to my stone fireplace. The space is large and adequate for any solution. Thank you very much!"
Our recommendation
The type of structure that will flank your fireplace depends on the decorating style of your room.
You can choose shelf system constructed by drywall or wood on either side of the fireplace symmetrically or asymmetrically. The lower part of the structure can be cabinetry, or furthermore, you can have a column on one side, depending on the layout of the room. The structure can be up to the ceiling or to the middle of the fireplace wall, depending on your

“I am astounded at the good work on your website and I read all the articles on a daily basis! I would like your advice! I bought a small entrance piece of furniture, which has a hand painted vintage look. What paint color to pick for the wall behind it and what color for the dining set, as it can be seen when entering the house. I would like neoclassical style dining set with carved dining chairs. My sofa is white leather. Thank you for your time."
Sketches, either you are an architect, interior designer or graphic designer, are an important communication tool than not only helps you communicate your idea with your clients but also convert your abstract ideas into specific drawings.
The illusion of three-dimensionality enhances sketches, even the simplest ones, makes them more vivid and sophisticated. Below you’ll see 3 simple techniques that will help you break the flatness of the paper and add depth and 3 dimensionality to your sketches.
- By using light, mediun and dark tones. Any object is visible only under light. The parts of an object that are closer to a light source are lighter than the parts of the objects that are farther from the light source.
Look the following shapes. The first sphere seems flat while the second seems 3 dimensional. The only thing that it was applied to the second sphere was the technique of light, medium and dark tones. The same technique was applied to the cylinder.

Reader’s question
"I need your help on what paint colors to pick for the walls of my open plan living room kitchen. I have decapé gray-white kitchen cabinets and beige tile backsplash. The fireplace is painted in beige shades and the aluminum French doors are green color"
Our recommendation
There are many color options; however, the final choice depends on your needs, preferences and the features of the area (lighting, room dimensions, furniture layout, etc).
As we don’t have more information and we do not have pictures of the place, we suggest three options to select, which one suits your space.
• Solution 1: Paint all the walls a neutral, bright color
If you want to achieve a simple and severe look, you can paint all the walls the same color. A good choice would be white or off-white color with pops of color on cushions, rugs, or other decorative elements.
• Solution 2: Visually divide the open space using different colors
Choose two different colors and paint one color the living room and the other color the kitchen. If the place is dark and small choose light colors. An interesting combination would be light green (for the living room), a calm and both dynamic color that creates feelings of relaxation and beige (for the kitchen.
• Solution 3: Accent one wall with a deep dark color
Paint the walls a neutral, light color (for example, off-white/beige/light gray) and accent one wall a deep and strong color. Some interesting choices are berry color and rotten apple color.
Reader’s question
"I am remodeling my old style apartment which is classic regarding the plan and the decorating style. Could I paint the doors a light gray color instead of white? Is this color suitable for a baroque style furniture, paintings, etc? What paint color to choose for the walls in the living room and the bedroom? The furniture is brown and the living room set upholstery is mustard/gold. Thank you very much for your time!"
