Reader’s question
“I am going to move to a new house which has 2.22m high ceiling. Considering that I will have decorating issues I would like you to suggest me some tricks for making the ceiling look higher! Thank you in advance!"
Our recommendation
Making a place with a small height appear bigger and pleasant is always a challenge to decorators.
Thus, we suggest choosing light and cool paint colors for the walls, such as cream, ice blue, pale tones of green and lilac. Cool colors always create a feeling of spaciousness.
Choose glossy snow white paint color for all the trims and ceilings which reflects natural light and gives the impression of height.
Alternatively, you can paint walls and ceilings the same light color. The lack of a boundary between walls and ceilings creates the optical illusion that the walls are higher.
Create vertical stripes on the walls in two tones of the same color or of the same color but one glossy one flat.
Choose small furniture with simple lines.
Select full-length curtains, hang wall mirrors in proper locations and artwork slightly higher than normal on the walls to fool the eye.
Choose wall-mounted luminaires that are aimed upwards and avoid pendant lighting in the middle of the space.
