A window is an opening in a wall, roof or vehicle that allows the passage of light, and if not closed air and sound. In the market there are several, different types of windows and they can be categorized into different ways. For example, windows can be categorized according to their material into aluminum, wooden, PVC, metal windows etc, or according to their characteristics into soundproof, thermal insulation, security windows etc.
Windows can also be categorized, according to the way they operate. There are two basic categories: Hinged/ Casement windows and sliding windows.
Hinged Windows
- Casement windows have one or two hinged sashes that swings in or out like a door. A casement window may be left-handed, right-handed or double. They open and close easily with a turn of a crank handle. The main advantage of casement windows is that they can be fully opened, offering excellent ventilation. Moreover, they are tightly sealed for energy efficiency and when shut offer low air-leakage rate and noise reduction. The main disadvantage is that they open either outward or inward, so the area in front of the window should be free of any furniture and obstacles.
- Tilt and turn window: This window functions in two ways: It can tilt inwards at the top only for ventilation or open inwards from hinges at the side.
- Center pivot windows: These windows have an elegant appearance and they can operate either vertically or horizontally. When open offer excellent ventilation.
Sliding windows
- Horizontal sliding sash windows have two or more sashes that overlap slightly but slide horizontally within the frame. There elegant windows that can cover large openings without obstructing the view. The main disadvantage is that you can open only one sash at a time.
- Double Hung or single hung vertical slider window features two sashes (movable panels) that slide vertically open and closed. The main disadvantage is that horizontal rail in the middle obstructs the view.
- Bi-Fold window systems are ideal for opening one space to another, for example indoor to outdoor.
