Make a decorative bowl or fruit bowl recycling old vinyl records. Vinyl is a plastic material that melts at high temperatures. So, if a vinyl record is placed in a hot oven or left under the sun, it will melt and become flexible. When it is still hot, you can shape the record with your hands. Please, keep in mind that the disk will be ruined and will become unplayable. Before, recycling the disc we suggest to check the internet, to make sure that the old disc is not collectible and thus valuable.
Materials and tools.
- Vinyl record
- An oven-safe ceramic, glass or metal bowl.
- An oven
Instructions:
Step 1. Preheat the oven at 80 to 100 Celsius degrees. I suggest not heating the oven at higher temperatures because the disc will melt too quickly. Moreover, the gases from the burning plastic will smell bad.
Step 2. Place the oven-safe bowl upside down over the oven shelf.
Step 3. Place the record, centered on top of the bowl. The side you want to be the inside of the vinyl bowl should be oriented down.
Step 4. Close the door of the oven. In less than 5 minutes the disc will start to bend, embracing the inner bowl.
Step 5. Open the door of the oven. Use oven mitts to bring the bowl out. When it is still hot, it is pliable and can be shaped with your hands. If it colds and becomes hard before you give the bowl, the desired shape, put it back in the hot oven for about 2 minutes and shape it again with your hands.
