Readers’ questions:
"The furniture in my living room is brown. I would like to paint my walls in bright colors. What colors would you recommend? Would violet be a good choice?"
Our recommendations:
Sure, you can use bright wall colors–as long as you take into account the room’s style and its lighting, i.e. whether there is sufficient natural light. You mentioned violet so we assume that it is a color you like. If that is the case, we would suggest some color palettes inspired by heather (the plant official known as erica carnea).
One-tone color combinations
Not all shades of violet, mauve and purple are created equal. Some are warmer and others are cooler and we would suggest a warm violet. You could create contrast by having some of the walls painted a deeper shade of violet and the others a lighter shade.
Reader's question:
"I am about to choose a color scheme for a boy's room (5 years old). The furniture are cherry wood with a few blue details on the drawers. I am thinking of painting a feature wall with blue-grey and the rest of the room white. What do you think?"
Our recommendations:
We would suggest you to opt for a more colourful and unusual color scheme (than the ordinary blue and white). For example, you could try to use creatively the following three colors:
- The light blue: It is a bright and cheerful color
- The olive green: It willl help your child calm and concentrate
- A soft ochre-yellow: It will add vitality to the room
The three-color scheme, it can be applied in many different ways. For example, each wall it can be painted with one of the three colors.
The bed in my bedroom is upholstered in beige and cinnamon and the bedside tables are dark walnut hardwood. What colors would you recommend for the walls and the bedside tables? What color would you suggest for the curtains? Can I choose dark colorsfor the walls?"
Our recommendations
You could use dark shades to highlight focal points, e.g. the wall behind the bed painted in deep purple and a soft shade of magnolia applied to the others. The bedside tables can be painted in either the shade of magnolia or the cinnamon shade of the bed, depending on what color appeals to your taste in order to maintain a lighter or darker atmosphere in your bedroom.
Regarding the curtains’ fabric you could choose delicate organza or linen in ivory to match with the decoration style of the room.
Sliding panel blinds in dark purple, or floral curtains in opaque fabric are good selection for a deep, restful sleep.
Benefit from the positive energy the black color has to offer, by using it selectively in details, such as spotlights, picture frames, even in the fabric patterns of the cushions.
Another option could be the following color scheme.
Combine cobalt blue, on a wide stripe on the wall behind the bed and the ceiling, with the color of sand on the others. A rich chocolate shade for both the curtains and draperies is a good selection. Combine silver details to add elegance to the relaxing atmosphere the blue color offers.
Reader's question:
"I would like suggestions on how to make the fireplace nook in my home feel cozy. The room has hardwood flooring, timber windows and wood crown moulding. The fireplace is covered in ornate stone veneer"
Our recommendations:
In designing this space, we drew inspiration from the warm and cozy atmopshere of bistro lounges, where friends can enjoy each other’s company by the fire.
You can build a floor to ceiling set of oak bookcases and cabinets flanking the fireplace. The bookcase checkerboard pattern matches the fireplace stone veneer. The lower part of the bookcase on the right features a log holder.
