Reader's question:

"Our boy is twelve years old. He likes to spend time in his room. He also likes reading and sketching. We are trying to choose a single bed for his room. Which of the ikea beds, would you recommend?"

Our advice:

Ikea beds are clever and well-designed furniture, not only for children but for teens and young people. 

The most economical choice is certainly the bed FJELLSE. Actually, it is frame, made from solid wood. The best feature of this bed is the untreated, natural surface that can be painted with lacquer, wax, stain or oil. 

This bed is an interesting and cheap choice. We believe that the untreated surface can painted and decorated in many ways (for example with acrylic colors) to match the style of a young boy. 

The MALM bed is made from particleboard and fiberboard and it is available in two colors (black and white). The best feature of this furniture is the simplicity of it's design. Thus, the bed matches with many decoration styles. Additionaly, it has adjustable bed rails allow the use of mattresses of different heights.

This bed has a simple design and matches with many decoration styles.  We suggest, to combine the bed with colorful sheets and pillows. 

Another, iinteresting option is the ODDA bed, which coordinates with other furniture in the ODDA series . The best feature is the storage area with the shenves under the bed. Our opinion is that the headboard in not height enought.  

This bed offers extra storage area with two shelves. 

Now our opinion is that the bed FJELLSE is the best choice not only because it the cheapest single bed, but because it is made from solid pine wood. So the surface it can be treated in many crative ways. For exampl, it's up to the user (your son) to decide whether he likes the surface natural or more decorative. You could also encourage your son to paint it by himself.
