Reader‘s question
"I have a two-storey house and I would like to split it up into two flats. However, how could I use the space under the stairs and what options do I have without removing the stair?"
Our recommendation
A stair is a functional and morphological element in the room, even when not in use, assuming it will be 'transformed' successfully.
Initially the integration of the stair in the place should meet your functional and aesthetic requirements. There are many options which depend on
• the morphology of the stair (shape, material, railing)
• the use of the space under the stair you would prefer (e.g. storage, bookcase, etc.).
Possible functions which can be arranged in the space under the staircase are the following:
The space under the stairs can be converted into a dresser, closet, cellar, etc.
Under the staircase a large bookcase could be placed.
