Reader’s question
"I am planning a total renovation of the bathroom in my apartment and I would appreciate if you could give me some decorating ideas to become functional and pleasant. I have attached a dimensioned plan of the space. Sanitary ware should remain in the same position. I would like the new bathroom to have a modern minimalist style, providing freshness and relaxation, something like a "Zen" atmosphere. Thank you in advance".

Our recommendation
After we have considered the data you have sent us we suggest two options
A. Bathroom layout
Option 1
For more spaciousness and proper position of the bathroom sink we suggest a corner bathtub 1.30 x 1.30m and next to it a wall-mounted vessel sink vanity 0.70x0.45m. The toilet and washing machine remain in their current position.
The new location of the sink vanity welcomes everyone entering the area. A small cabinet over the washer can store miscellaneous items.

Option 2
We suggest a different shape of corner bathtub 1.40x1.00m which allows for a column of drawers which gives extra storage space adjacent to the bathroom vanity.

B. Decor - Accessories
A minimalist approach to decorating style will create a relaxing and tranquil atmosphere.
You should organize your necessities in cabinets to avoid overcrowding in the space, you can place sponges, soaps etc in wicker baskets.
Choose towels in colors to coordinate with the colors of the bathroom and cluster them rolled-up.
At appropriate positions, place rattan stools and candles in various sizes.
Use natural materials e.g. wood in natural color for the bathroom vanity, inox for bathroom faucets and accessories, handles and metal details, pebbles in various jars.
Select tiles in warm earthy colors, such as soft green, blue, beige and white, which are "zen" colors and combine them with chocolate brown color.

C. Lighting
Choose various lighting sources in combination to achieve balance and flexibility to the different functions in the bathroom. Over the sink place downlights, which give good lighting for shaving, tweezing and applying make-up. Choose side mirror sconces to eliminate the shadows on people's face. Use dimmer indirect lighting sources in the tub area to easily control the light level while someone is taking a bath.
