The living room is the space where we spend time with others relaxing, chatting, watching television, reading the newspaper. Also, it is one of the most visible areas of the home.
The sofa is one of the largest pieces of furniture and when deciding the living room layout you should think carefully where to place it and how to arrange the rest of the furniture. Once you decide where you're going to put the sofa, the location of all other pieces, such as chairs and coffee tables, falls into place.
Sofa measurements
Most furniture is manufactured to standard measurements. Although, you can find sofas in many styles, colors or upholstery fabrics, most sofas share the same approximate measurements. However, before actually buying a sofa you should measure it to see if it will fit inside the space you have.
The sofas and chairs should be placed within reaching distance of coffee tables and you and your guests should be in easy reach of places to set drinks, refreshments and remote controls.
Furniture arrangements in one home rarely translate to another. First, you should arrange the largest piece (the sofa), then the loveseat and finally the occasional chairs, the coffee table, a large chair, etc.
- CREATING A CORNER
1) With a Sectional Sofa: A sectional sofa with its multple pieces can create many seating options for your family and guests, offering plenty of space for everyone to lounge comfortably. You can pick pieces that create an L-shaped sofa with or without built-in chaise or footrest pieces, with armed or armless ends.
Moreover, you can situate a table at either end of the L-shaped sofa and a coffee table in the empty space. Occasionally, you can add ottomans and floor pillows to serve more visitors.
2) With a 3 seater sofa and a loveseat: you can place a sofa and a loveseat in an L-shaped arrangement to face a focal point (a window with a view, a fireplace or the TV)
3) With 3-seater sofas: You can place two sofas in an L-shaped arrangement to face a focal point (a window with a view, a fireplace or the TV). Between the sofas, you can place a floor lamp or a table with a table lamp.
4) With a sofa and a chaise longue: A chaise longue is an upoholstered sofa in the shape of a chair that is long enough to support the legs. You can place a sofa and a chaise longue in an L-shaped arrangement to creaty a cozy and relaxing nook.
5) With a 3-seater sofa and two chairs: A minimal solution, ideal when there is not enough space in the room or when we don't have many visitors.
6) With a loveseat and a chair: A solution for very small appartments or as a secondary corner for conversation and reading.
7) With two chaise longues: An L-shaped arrangement ideal for relaxing and reading a good book.
