Reader’s question
“I have an open plan living room kitchen. I would like to place a fireplace which can be located anywhere in the space. What concerns me is how I can arrange the fireplace, a corner sofa, a TV set, a dining set and (or) a computer desk in the room. The kitchen cabinets are in a combination of white and dark gray. Some parts of the walls are also painted dark grey and the floor has beige tiles.”
Our recommendation
furniture arrangement
We suggest 2 options for the location of the fireplace.
Option 1
We suggest classic placement of the fireplace on the longitudinal oblique wall; the difficult acute angle between the walls can be eliminated by a drywall construction, which incorporates the television set and storage of wood.
Above the fireplace you can create a recess into the wall over the fireplace, and over the TV you can place one or two shelves.
Close to the entrance we suggest to place a dining table for 8 people.
We believe that in order to create a sense of spaciousness in the space you should not add a computer nook in the living room.
Option 2
We suggest the fireplace to be installed perpendicular to the oblique wall, so that it can be seen from the dining area. The acute angle of the walls is eliminated by a drywall construction on which the TV is mounted. Also wood storage is provided next to the fireplace. A corner sofa is placed opposite the fireplace and the TV and the dining set is placed near the entrance.
wall color schemes
We keep the walls white and dark gray and we paint the drywall construction either pistachio green or deep red.
Alternatively we suggest a more daring color scheme. We suggest teal paint color for the walls and terracotta paint color for the drywall construction.
We suggest upholstery fabrics in shades of gray or beige and walnut coffee and dining tables which can be perfectly paired with white and dark gray or beige colors.
