Reader’s question

"I have an old armchair which I would like to renovate. I have painted the arms and legs with silver spray paint. I am thinking to place it in my bedroom, but I do not know what kind of fabric and what color to choose for reupholstering it! The room is done in white tones-white curtains, off-white color walls, gray upholstered bed with high headboard, and white lamp shades with polished nickel details. It would be most helpful if you could give me some ideas! Thank you in advance! "

Our recommendations

Whites and neutral tones are dominant in your bedroom. Consequently a wide range of fabrics in various patterns and different colors could fit in the room. Therefore, the fabric you will choose for the armchair depends on the decorating style of the room (eg, modern, minimal, romantic, etc.). We suggest three different options

Youthful and modern decorating style

In this case you can choose a cotton fabric, either white or colorful patterned (eg striped). Cotton is a cool and hypoallergenic fabric which will give a new look to the old armchair.

If you choose a patterned fabric the armchair will appear vibrant and youthful. If you choose a simple white fabric the look of the armchair will be neutral.

gingham upholstered armchair

The pattern can be geometric (stripes, polka dots, checks, etc.) or freehand (floral). A great fabric option is gingham which is a very popular choice for decorating rooms.

Romantic style

If you like to give the armchair and the entire bedroom, a romantic style that refers to the purity and the naivety of the kids, you can choose gingham fabric in blue or other pale shades.

If you like your armchair look sleek you can upholster it with the classy toile fabric.

Luxurious and sensual style

Finally, if you like to have a luxurious armchair, you can renovate it with the sensual velvet. For example, you can choose pain white velvet or in combination with gray.
