The most significant difference between the major sink types is the manner in which they are installed. These are the basic sink types:
- Wall mounted sinks:
Wall- mounted sinks hang directly from the wall, taking up little space and offering easy access to plumbing hookups. Wall-mounted sinks are ideal options for half baths and small bathrooms. Some types, feature attatched bodies or aprons that hide plumbing.
- Pedestal sinks:
They are also wall-mounted sinks that rest on a pedestal that may or may not provide actual support to the sink bowl. Usually the pedestal conseals plumbing. The drawback of this type is the lack of storage space under the sink bowl.
- Console sinks:
They are wall mounted sinks that rest on legs. The legs support the front two corners while an apron often masks the pluming hookups. A small starage space can be created underneath simple by placing a basket or a shelving unit.
- Self-rimming sinks (also calls drop-ins)
Self-rimming sinks drop into a cutout in the countertop and usually are secured with mounting clips from below. The rim overlaps the cutout edges.
- Integral sinks.
Usually, they are made of solid surface material like corian and acrylic. The bowl and the countertop are one piece. They are easy to clean and mantain.
- Undermounted sinks:
They are attached with clips beneath a cutout in a solid surface, stone or concrete countertop. The countertop should be contiguous and waterproof.
- Vessel sinks.
The sit on top of a countertop with only a small cut out for the drain.
