Reader's question
“I've been following your site for quite some time and I find your ideas incredible. And now the time has come for me to ask for some advice. It is about my living room's arrangement. The space in question is rectangular shaped with a door on the bottom left corner, facing a fireplace located 3 meters across the door. On the fireplace's right there is a patio door. A second patio door is located on the right side of the rectangular space and on the left side are the kitchen and the dining area. Arranging furniture is very difficult due to the patio doors and the fireplace's position. I hope my description will make sense to you. Thank you in advance and I'll be waiting for your advice.”
Our recommendation
We tried to draw a plan out of your description, so our suggestion will make more sense to you. You mentioned that the space is 3 meters wide, but you gave us no information regarding either the length of the room or the distance between the fireplace and the patio door. Having in mind an average living room we assumed the placement of the patio door and the length of the space at 5 meters and then proceeded with the planning.
It is obvious that there are difficulties regarding the furniture placement due to many limitations.
Firstly the short width of the space in addition to the fireplace position (opposite the door) make it impossible to have a couch facing the fireplace, which would also block the path to the kitchen and the dining area. So the space on the right side is the only option left. Having patio doors on both vertical walls and very little space for the living room left, we decided that the only option is to block the path to one of the patio doors. If we treat the patio door as a window then we are left with plenty of space on the bottom right corner of the room to create a sitting area/corner facing the fireplace and the patio door next to it. The TV will be mounted on the free wall and its position will be determined by you, as we have no information regarding its distance from the fireplace.
Also if the correlation between the fireplace and the sitting area allows it (meaning that the fireplace is more on the right side than how we pictured it), then you could mount the TV on the fireplace. We believe that this arrangement will give your space a relatively good flow. Good luck!
