" I would like some ideas for my living room. My sofa is in light gray with gray-black pillows. The curtains are light gray and the drapery is gray-black. I have furniture that is a wenge color. I would like to hang a painting in the dining area. What colors should be the artwork to brighten up the space? I am thinking of shades of purple. What is your opinion?"

Artwork is mainly selected according to your preferences and there is no need to blend with the decorating style of the house; art is a perfect way to combine different styles. For example, if your house has contemporary style of decorating, your paintings should not to be modern.
Also, artwork colors are not necessary to be in the same color family as your color scheme. Paintings should be chosen by independent criteria (personal aesthetic, artistic value, etc) so as to reflect your personality. Art is very subjective creates different emotions to different people. You should purchase art that means something to you and makes you happy. If you consider that your space is dark, neutral, and severe you can select art with a pleasing theme in bright colors.
