Placemats are made from several materials, like paper, plastic, fabric, bamboo, leather, etc.
However, their usefulness is under question since fabric placemats must be run through the washer and drier before it can be used again while paper and plastic placemats have drawn criticism on environmental and aesthetic grounds.
Their primary function is to protect the table from stains, heat, liquids, etc. They also serve as decoration.
