Reader’s question
" I would appreciate your advice for the color of the dining chairs and the color of rugs for my open-plan lounge dining room. We have light cherry parquet floor (but not reddish) and dark beige curtains. The walls are painted off white. We have a sectional in a light beige shade and a TV stand wenge wood / beige lacquer. Also there are two sofas in light grey and a glass coffee table opposite the fireplace. What color rug would match best with them?
The dining table is glass with gray lacquer legs. What color chairs to pair with the table so that the space looks modern? Thank you in advance."
Our recommendations
From your description we assume that the lounge area is in a neutral colour scheme without intensity allowing you to choose any favourite colour for the space or to maintain the feeling of calm and serenity by choosing neutral shades in darker tones.
A. Selection of neutral shades
The chairs
We recommended chairs in gray lacquer wood frame / seat and back upholstered in beige fabric or leather, which highlights the bright transparency of the glass table.
The rugs
We suggest two rugs in a chocolate brown shade for the living area to highlight the accent of the floor and one in a slightly dark gray shade for the dining area to feature the dining set.
B. Selection of colour shades
The color selection must compliment the rest elements colouring (artwork, decorating items, etc).
The chairs
The chairs can also be in gray lacquer wood frame / seat and back upholstered in beige fabric or leather. However, we recommend the chocolate brown shade, which is a rich hue that "warms up" the coldness of the glass table.
The rugs
We suggest some contrast in the living room by selecting gray rugs for the living area and a rug in deep red for the dining area (either with beige or chocolate brown-chairs).
Alternatively you can place the red rug under the glass coffee table opposite the fireplace to pair with the red colour of the fire.
Finally, you should prefer plain fabric, or even leather upholstery for the chairs avoiding large scale pattern fabrics to provide a modern style in your space.
