The rule of thumb is that the top surface area of an end table should be equal to or just below the height of the sofa arms. A standard sofa arm, is around 24-25 inches high, but you should always measure with the tape to be sure, since sofas do not have all have the same arm height. Most end tables are between 22 and 30 inches (55 to 76 cm) while the standard height is 24-25 inches (61 to 64 cm).
The end table is not suggested to be taller than the sofa arm. When the table top is above the sofa arm the result is awkard and also can make it hard for people to place a glass or pick up a book. If you can’t find end tables to match with your sofas and arm height, opt for a shorter rather than a taller table.
What end table to pick when you have an armless sofa?
If you have an armless sofa you have two options: Either select end tables that suit the height where arms would normally sit (24-25 inches or 61 to 64 cm), or buy low models that are level with the seat (14-17 inches or 35-45 cm). Neither option is better than the other. It just depends on your preferences and the balance of your space.
