Reader's question:
"What is the ideal height for the kitchen countertop? I am a tall person and I find uncomfortable working in a worktop of 900mm height. Can I raise the kitchen worktop?"
Our answer:
The issue of the worktop height is rather complicated since it has to suit men, women, children, elderly people, tall and short people. The standard worktop height is 900mm. However, several researches suggest that this height should be increased to 950mm- 970mm, and that it is more comfortable to work is a surface that it too high rather than in a low kitchen worktop.
So, tall people can increase the worktop height, by increasing the toe recess height. Under-counter appliances have a standard height of 850mm and will fit in taller countertop. In case, there are free-standing appliances the difference in height (between countertop and cooker for example) will be apparent.
On the other hand, short people can not lower the worktop height, especcialy when the have built-in appliances. The inderside of the worktop should not be less that 870mm high in order built-in appliances to fit.
The thickness of the worktop is usually between 30-50mm.
Moreover, there are several jobs, that there easier to do at table top height (740-750mm), standing or sitting, such as hand whisking in a bowl, peeling potatoes. So, use the dining table with a protective cloth or a protective glass surface.
